Ofwono Opondo, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for the Older Persons Member of Parliament, Eastern Region, has reaffirmed the ruling party’s growing strength and broad national support as Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections.
Speaking on NBS Frontline on Thursday, Opondo addressed emerging political narratives, dismissing claims suggesting declining backing for the NRM.
He highlighted the party’s strong performance during candidate nominations across the country and noted a record number of unopposed candidates in this election cycle.
“The highest number of unopposed NRM candidates we have had before was six. This time, we have eleven—and we even expect more. That demonstrates the confidence Ugandans continue to place in the NRM,” he said.
Opondo also countered opposition allegations of political negotiations in Tororo District, noting that NUP candidates there allegedly sought money to withdraw from races.
“You can cross-check with those actually nominated for the nine constituencies in Tororo,” he added.
Responding to commentary on the emergence of new political forces such as the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), Opondo argued that there is no evidence these groups will make a significant impact in the upcoming election or in Parliament.
He further refuted claims by Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda that the party’s numerical strength is irrelevant, emphasizing the centrality of voter support in democratic outcomes.
“Ssemujju thinks numbers have no bearing, and yet elections are won by numbers,” Opondo said.
Throughout his address, Opondo stressed that the NRM remains committed to a peaceful and competitive electoral process, grounded in service delivery and tangible achievements.
He expressed confidence that the party’s continued leadership enjoys widespread public trust.
